or my version of it.
judgement is simply a reflection of fear. a confession that we don't understand something. so being judged can so easily be disregarded. and downplayed to something mistaken or miss taken.
so. there it is.

I think you're right, that people use judgement as a kind of defence mechanism. Perhapse even more fundamental is that most people want to reduce life down to a few simple catagories. It makes life feel safe, stable and predictable. We have our catagories of kinds of people, sorts of behavior, check lists of what we need to do to get into heaven etc. It's much easier that way. Then we don't have to think about what things really are, or what we're really becomming. We just pop it in the category or check it off the list. :)
